The language of this region is called either Galician or Gallego. Yet most scholars consider Portuguese and Gallego to be dialects of a single &#8220;romance&#8221; (derived from Latin) language. However, politics dictates that we give it its own name. The Spanish (Castellano) name of the town is &#8220;La Coru\u00f1a&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-471\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.34.46.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-471\" alt=\"Hercules\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.34.46-198x300.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.34.46-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.34.46.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hercules<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We disembarked the ship with the modest goal of visiting the &#8220;Tower of Hercules&#8221;, an ancient lighthouse at the northern side of the city. Though the name evokes Greek mythology, the original lighthouse was built by the Romans in the first of second century CE.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.37.14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-472\" alt=\"Gaitero\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-09-22-10.37.14-161x300.jpg\" width=\"161\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>We blundered our way to the monument on a city bus, and as we approached the tower on foot encountered a &#8220;gaitero&#8221; (bagpiper). A form of bagpipe is a traditional instrument in this region, and was not introduced from Scotland. In fact evidence seems to indicate that bagpipes in this part of Spain predated any such instrument in the British Isles.
