Unlike Calatayud, I had already been to Zaragoza. It is a large city, bustling with activity. A city both ancient and modern.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/callealfonsoi\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-88\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-88\" alt=\"CalleAlfonsoI\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CalleAlfonsoI-238x300.jpg\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CalleAlfonsoI-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CalleAlfonsoI-813x1024.jpg 813w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CalleAlfonsoI.jpg 953w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>From Zaragoza&#8217;s train station, I took the bus toward the center of the older part of town, and headed on foot down Alfonso I toward the basilica of the Virgin of Pilar. My hotel was just across the plaza from the church.<\/p>\n<p>I had stayed at this hotel before, but it had been many years before. When the great exposition was held in Zaragoza in 2008, the hotel had been totally redecorated, and raised it prices.<br \/>\nPrices had settled back down since, but the interior, once comfortable though worn, now had a bright antiseptic white theme, with silly names associated with each guest room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-34\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-89\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-89\" alt=\"Basilica of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Pilar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pilar-day-300x206.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pilar-day-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pilar-day-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pilar-day-436x300.jpg 436w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pilar-day.jpg 1454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back of the cathedral faces the Ebro river, and at the front side is a huge plaza. Just a bit further east is the impressive cathedral known as &#8220;La Seu&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now was a good time to head back west again, and move beyond the plaza to visit the central market. I have never been in this part of town late at night, and in Spain, nightlife doesn&#8217;t get started until long after I am sawing logs. Actually the town itself was called\u00a0Caesaraugusta during the Roman Period, and its current name is the result of many hundreds of years of\u00a0 corruption. (Think of what New Orleans will be called hundreds of years from now. N&#8217;awlins is already a few steps along the way in a similar process that cr<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-49\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-105\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-105\" alt=\"San Pablo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloPeeksOut-169x300.jpg\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloPeeksOut-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloPeeksOut-578x1024.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloPeeksOut.jpg 1129w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>eated the name Zaragoza.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-48\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-104\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-104\" alt=\"Rana\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Rana-300x231.jpg\" width=\"195\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I saw this small frog statue and had to add it here for Rhonda!<\/p>\n<p>Continuing west, I can see the Mudajar tower of the San Pablo church peeking up from among various apartment buildings. The town has closed in around many monuments, and it becomes difficult to get a clear\u00a0 open view of them! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-50\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-106\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-106\" alt=\"San Pablo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloFachada-166x300.jpg\" width=\"166\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloFachada-166x300.jpg 166w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloFachada-567x1024.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/SanPabloFachada.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a>The next picture is a view of the entrance, as seen across a rather narrow street.<\/p>\n<p>As we leave Zaragoza,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-51\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-107\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Work zone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WorkZone-300x199.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a> I should mention that the fair of 2008 was on the two hundredth anniversary of the bloody siege of Zaragoza which occurred duringSpain&#8217;s war of independence as it sought to through off the yoke of French occupation under Napoleon&#8217;s troops. A flurry of civic improvements begun in preparation for the fair h<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/zaragoza-interlude\/sony-dsc-52\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-108\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-108\" alt=\"Work zone at Coso\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seafog.net\/PeresRamblings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WorkZone2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"202\" height=\"137\" \/><\/a>ave led to more public works. Much of the city is torn up and disturbed by work on a new street car system.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I speak of leaving Zaragoza, but it wouldn&#8217;t be for long!
